Louisiana Facts-of-the-Day Extra Info

September 23, 1806

The Lewis and Clark expedition returns to St. Louis September 23 after nearly 28 months of exploration. The expedition had been given up for lost, and its return is celebrated throughout the country. Only one man has been lost, and the maps, notes, and specimens brought back will be of immense value to scientists. Lewis is named governor of the Louisiana Territory and will hold the position until his mysterious death in October 1809 while traveling near Nashville, Tennessee, en route to Washington.
