Southern University closed following protest

Officials at Louisiana's Southern University, the largest all-black state college in the South, closed the school after students began protesting the expulsion of sit-in demonstrators.

Under pressure from state authorities, administrators at many publicly supported black colleges used expulsions and shut-downs to stop sit-ins and related activities. Later in the 1960s and 1970s, this became a common way of dealing with student disturbances.
