Brainstorming Session Hooks from a CPSB Inservice
Another Way to Start a Lesson
First, let us say that these ideas are just that, ideas. Several teachers have tried things like this and with input from other teachers in our group came up with the idea presented below.
- Come into class on day one of your archeology lesson with a large trash bag filled with garbage (cleaned of course). Dump it in the middle of the floor and tell students you need to find out who put this on your front lawn. They need to figure out what type of person or family it belongs to, what they ate, how they live, - generally as much as they possibly can tell you.
- Once they have seached the "artifacts" discuss the meaning of archeology and about how we use left behind materials to tell us about other cultures.
If you use this ideas please email me and let me know what you did and how it worked so that I can pass that information along to other teachers.
