The Louisiana Explorers History Club
began in 1992 at Vinton Northside Middle School
and became a school favorite last year at Oak Park Middle
School in Lake Charles. Chosen students do Saturday field studies across
the state gaining valuable hands-on experience about Louisiana. The club visits
everything from capitols to forts, rural life settings to plantation homes, dining
at dancin' places and fancy places, hearing ghost stories and telling lots of
stories. They leave at 5 am and return at 11 pm, work on essays and historical
rubbings, do architectural drawings and speed sketches, and travel on "good" days
and "rainy days".
In 2001 The Explorers received two grants to help with expenses. The Michael Jordan Foundation Grant and the Louisiana Heritage Grant helped students travel to seven hitorial sites around Louisiana.
